I don't know of any books but I have learned a little from using the Object Browser (F2). I don't think you need to use DDE because Microsoft provides the object libraries to access them directly. In your references, just add Microsoft Excel x.x to your project. You will then see the Excel object in the list and you'll be able to see all of the classes, etc. that come with it.
