Hi,

I have setup an NT4 domain to test the upgrade process to windows 2000 active directory.

The upgrade of my PDC completes fine untill it trys to contact a DNS server. I have got a BIND server running which resonds to querys fine using 'nslookup' but DCPROMO cannot find the server and displays the following error:

"Wizard cannot contact DNS server that handles "test.com"to determine if it supports dynamic updates"

Please help I completely stuck.

Cheers.

Which version of BIND???

Your host name resolution needs to recognise SRV records!!!!

If you discover you BIND DNS server does not support SRV records, you can still move forward with your installation by performing the following:

1) Change your TCP/IP properties of your NT domain controller so that DNS points only to itelf (remove the BIND servers IP entries)

2) Run DCPROMO (and choose to install DNS locally)

3) Create a delagation on your UNIX server for test.com. Then pointing to your new Windows 2000 DNS server.

I am running BIND 9.2.0. I will try to setup the SRV records on the server.

Cheers for your help.

joseph...
it is more recent than 8.2.2 so it SHOULD support SRV records...

How can I test that the SRV records are functioning correctly? I am new to this so could you be specific as possible please?

My knowledge of BIND is fairly limited - I am guessing the entries for the srv records will need to be added to your DNS zone:

_ldap._tcp. ._sites.gc._msdcs.<DNSTreeName> (Global Catalog)

_ldap._tcp.<SiteName>._sites.<DNSDomainName> (DC)

Hopefully someone with more of a UNIX/BIND background can be of more assistance - above examples are windows DNS based

HTH anyway!!!!
