I'm getting an overflow using the DCount function. Is there anyway to overcome this?

I'm thinking using a dataset might work

I have never gotten an overflow from a DCount(). Maybe if you told us what you are attempting to accomplish...

d = DCount("[FIELD1]", "table1", "[Index] is null")

there are over 87,000 records in the table and i ned to update the null field with an incrementing number which will increase when a value is met in a certain field

all i need is a pointer to how adatasets work and are created and i could probably work it out from there

What is "d"? Did you Dim this as an Integer? If so, change it to Long.

We still don't know what you are attempting to accomplish and why.
