After much work, I've tracked down the most probable cause of my backups failing/hanging as a DCOM error with the Removable Storage database. I get event 10010 (The server {D61A27C6-8F53-11D0-BFA0-00A024151983} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.) This GUID refers to the Removable Storage service. After following the instructions in Q235032 to repair the database, the problem still hasn't gone away.

I'm lost!!!

Forgot to mention - the user account causing this error is the Backup Exec services account, which is only used for starting the Backup Exec services on a dedicated backup server. I can be 99% sure that this error is the cause of my backup probs.

Although this post is almost 1 year old, I had the same issue on Feb. 12, 2005 with BackupExec 9.1 on Windows 2000 Server SP4. No answers could be found by searching nor A change had been made to the server by an inexperienced administrator. My guess was a system configuration issue. I tried sfc /scannow without success. Reinstall of service pack 4 and a reboot resolved the DCOM 10010 error.

Mine started working again after a complete rebuild of the server!!!

To be honest, in this day and age, anything that requires a reboot after installing rings alarm bells with me: a sure sign that it's messed around with critical OS files.

I must speak with my manager about investigating alternative backup solutions...
