DBGrid with ODBCDirect connection

Has anyone come across this problem;
When using a bound DBGrid (DAO Library control) in a vb6 project which is connected to a SQL Server 2000 database via an ODBCDirect connection, the data in the columns appears normal when any other format other than text columns, ie. dates and numbers are fine, text columns are only displaying the first character of every cell!!!
The datasource control contains all the data its just the grid??

Any ideas anyone?
