Got a Kodak DC50 camera with DB9 male serial port cable. Tried to use adaptor/gender change to plug into my Compaq laptop's DB25 male printer port, but no luck in recognition. Think the problem is that printer port is parallel, and camera cable is serial. Have a DB15 male connection on laptop, but no luck finding adaptor for camera cable. Can I use DB9 to mouse or s-video adaptor? If not, any solutions?

I think you'll be out of luck... Your camera clearly needs serial data for its internal interface, and I don't think you'll find that sort of data flow from anything other than a serial port. I have a Fuji camera and have tried allsorts to make it work with ports other than serial, including a USB-to-Serial port adaptor - didn't work.

If you're just wanting this link to download images, then look at the convertors which will slip into your floppy disk drive. This convertor has a slot within it, which accepts the standard SmartMedia memory cards found in many cameras. Although fairly pricey, I believe it downloads images more quickly than the serial port connection (if you had one!).

Good luck!

Due to their size, notebooks don't have the 25-pin serial port. Notebooks usually have only 1 9-pin serial port. Newer ones don't even have that.

You should have a 9-pin serial port on your notebook unless you already use that for a mouse. If your mouse is on the serial port, try a PS/2 mouse, all notebooks in the last several years have had a PS/2 port for either a keyboard or mouse [both on some with a Y cable].

The 15-pin [in 3 rows] port is usually for a monitor so you can't use that. A 15-pin port in 2 rows is a game port [joystick] and also not usable.

Everything's going USB or IEEE1394 [Firewire]. InfraRed is not being used very much that I've seen, although it works pretty good with a suitable printer.

There used to be Serial port PCMCIA cards, but pretty scarce and pricey from what I saw here:

There is a recall on the AC adapter for the Kodak DC DC25, DC40, DC50, and DC120 cameras.
Check here:
The camera does have an option that may interest you, check here:

Most notebooks have the PCMCIA slots.

That site has to be one of the better ones in terms of ease-of-use and clear instructions.

Thanks!!! I looked around my Compaq and found the com port (which supports the PMCIA card that you can insert into the DC50 for 160 pics). Download the TWAIN software from Kodak and I'm off and running!

Great, now be sure to check the recall on the AC adapter.
