I have two applications that are accessing the same database. If there is a marked increase in the number of failed statements (found in snapshot), what does it mean? How is it possible to pin down which application it is coming from and which statement is failing?

I would expect you to be able to find this sort of information in the DB2 log.

If it is the same set of tables, a possibility of timeout or deadlock ...

Your snapshot monitor should tell the number of lock timeouts and deadlocks ...

You can use the deadlock event monitors to caputre the statements failing and if you are on V8, the deadlock with detail will show the tables involved ...
A cheatsheet sort of guide on setting up and operating the event monitor is available at
An additional note on writing event monitors to pipes should be available in this section shortly

Cheers
