DB1.mdb,DB2.mdb,DB3.mdb - What is causing this?

Some of our Access databases (Access 2000) seem to automatically generate copies of themselves. What causes this to happen? Not all of them do this.

I think I found the answer from searching through other similar questions.

This will happen when the mdb compact on close fails.
