DB too large

Hi
I have a db and i got a message that the DB is too big (1GB). I tried to "Compress" but get a message that there is more than one user trying to access data. But I am the only one that has the DB open and it is not opened as shared. I am realy starting to pull my own hair out. Does anyone know what could be causing this.

Try compacting it from the command line, using the /excl /Compact switches. If that doesn't work, try importing your tables one at a time into a blank database, compacting after each one.

You might also try making a copy of the database, and trying to compact it.

I assume you're using Access 97, since your limit is 1GB. Try downloading Jetcomp.exe - it can sometimes compact and repair a database that's not repairable another way.

Open the database and make sure you have the database window open. If you have a switchboard or main menu that loads upon opening hold the Shift key down before you open it and it will open to the database window.

Go to the Tools menus and select Security, User and Group Permissions. Click on Groups and then make sure that Database is selected from the Object Type combo box. Check the Open Exclusive option, if it's not already selected and then click OK.

Then try compacting your database. If it's successful, you'll need to repeat the steps I just outline above, but deselect the Open Exclusive option.

Question: has your database been nearly that big for quite a while, or did it suddenly grow to such an enormous size?

I've seen corrupt databases balloon by 50% per day until it was fixed. I saw a 16Mb database become 100Mb in less than a week.

Well it has been used for about a week now. And it had quite a few problems. The size seemed strange cause the DB only had about 800 records and the pictures(Ole) that was in each record was around 10KB before they were put in the DB. MAybe it is if they are saved as OLE-objects.

The problem with compacting the db turned out to be a corrupt ole-record. After I deleted it the table could be compacted but the size did not nudge at all. I was 'convinced' that I had to try something else and with a little help and a few hours the pictures in the forms and reports are now linked instead.
