Hello everybody,

I have a very strange problem when I open a particular database. The database window doesn't show up! Here are some things I already tried:
I opened other databases in design view and normal mode which worked perfectly.
I tried opening the database holding the SHIFT key pressed, but nothing appeared! (I did not put any restrictions for that in the startup)
Does anybody have any idea of what is going on? Please help me!
Thanks

Hi

Have you tried pressing F11 key?, this should cause Db Window to display,

If not there is some code in the DB cuasing it to stay hidden, in which case post back.
Hope this helps

Hi, thanks for yor reply.
Yes, I tried F11 too, but it doesn't work. I don't remember putting any VB code in which would cause the database to close or do strange things. The weird thing is that yesterday it worked, and today it doesn't. I also tried opening the db on different PCs, but no result. Could it be something else?
Thanks for your help!

Hi

If it is your database, rather than one you have inherited, then presumably you know what you have done to it.

So if you say you have not put code in to hid ethe Db Window, then let us first try the simple things.

Next thought, has the Db Window simply been dragged off the screen, so that it is there but not within the viewable area, (perhaps caused by changing screen resolution), with the Db Open, try the Window menu bar option and see if the DbWindow is listed. Hope this helps

Tanks again for your quick reply.
I didn't think about that, but that does not seem to be the problem.
I made the database a few weeks ago and it has been used a lot since, without any problems. That's why I was not completely sure about the VB code.
Here is an example of what I do: I open the database then close Access. When I only open Access (and not the db), I look under "File", where my database is not listed as a recently used database which seems very strange to me.

Maybe Access has problems with the db file itself, maybe it's corrupted or something?

Thanks again for your help. If you have any other ideas, I would be glad to hear them.

Hi

Why are you now talking about the file \ Open dialog, are you suspecting that the databse is not openning at all?

To check this out:

examine the directory where the mdb file is.

when the db (sayMyDb.mdb) is NOT open there should NOT be a file MyDb.ldb, if there is delete it.

Open the db with Access

Examine the directory again, now there should be a .ldb file, if there is not the database is not open Hope this helps

Really very strange. No .ldb file. If I open another database in the same folder, an .ldb appears. I don't understand what this means. It simply starts Access but doesn't open the file. Thanks anyway, if you any other ideas please let me know. Thanks a lot.

Mike

I would take a guess and say that there may be some sort of corruption in your database....If you are not getting a an .ldb on opening there is something seriously wrong....

Try opening a new database and import all the items from your current database. Then delete the old database and try the new one.... If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it? - Albert Einstein [atom]

Thanks for your help Robert. I tried it but it doesn't work. When I go to "File > Get External Data > Import" and select the database, the window just disappears as if the file didn't exist (I don't even see the window where I can select tables, queries, forms, etc).
I also looked in the properties of the file, nothing special there, exactly the same as all the other databases which work. Very special, never seen something like this before. I wonder if there are any other explanations, but if you do, please let me know.
Thanks

By the way Robert, I saw your reply in the "automatically generate a report in pdf format in Access 97" thread. I'm very interested in that code too, can I send you an email?
Thanks,

Mike

GMcFly,

Feel free to send an email....

As to this problem, try the exact opposite then....

create a blank database and then close it. open the database in question and try exporting (save as to external database) and see what happens....

if you want and can, attach it to the mail you send me and I will take a peek If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it? - Albert Einstein [atom]
