Database help

Hello fellow database programmers! I have a question...
I recently started working with a small software developement company that wants to develop a very large inventory control program. It is looking like a mega database with over 100,000 records. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what database engine is most affordable, fast and most importantly don't leave you broke trying to purchase licenses. Oracle has been considered but it's too expensive.

Acces would wprk, but would be borderline. We've got tables here with 300,000+ records, and it works. ut, it is sllooowww.

I'd suggest a SQL back end with a VB or Access front end. Tyrone Lumley
