OK so I have been struggling with this new problem recently. I have a recovery server offline that I use only when old emails need to be restored, I would normally perform full online restore while erasing old data and restoring IS and directory. This has been working fine for several years now till recently. I'm trying to access a last year's tape (tried three different tapes already) and I keep getting database errors.
First sign of trouble, when restore is complete the "Restore in Progress" key is not deleted. For some reason IS does not manage to play all the log files back so the database is inconsistent. If I remove the registry key, a different error occurs, Err_MissingLogFile (edb.log and edb.chk are missing but other log files are present). If I clear the log files I get JET_Inconsistent ...error. Soft recovery does not work and hard recovery kills all the attachements when complete.
I even tried reinstalled the recovery server and my Exchange 5.5 with all the service packs etc, yet still I'm unable to restore from tape. My online server works fine for now but I'm getting worried, I'm preparing a new Exchange 2003 server and it will be ready for deployment soon. I need to be able to access my tapes though, I've done this many times and all of the sudden all these problems...
