Hi! My employer is in the process of obtaining a Data warehousing software product to coinside with a Distribution software package he has and the Hardware has been left up to him to purchase. The OS will most likely be a Linux Distro and the database will be MySQL.

Is there anyone that could suggest a system that could handle a small Data Warehousing Non-OLAP configuration of less than 1/2 terabyte? I'm looking for bare minimums. Only one box will ever request data from this unit and this unit will pull data from the Distribution system.

Any suggestions?

P.S. The software vendor suggested a $600.00 pc for the project. I almost choked when I heard it.

what is your budget ? RAID or dont care ?
any processor requirement ? cuz some database software charge you by processor you want to use what you pay for

may give us a better picture on what he need if we have that

thanks

I'd gladly fill you in as soon as I get the basic specs myself.

I'm in the process of drawing up some specific questions for him to ask his support vendor. When I receive those specs, I'll in turn post them under this thread and hopefully there will be something you can use.

Thanks for your help.

I will be part of a teleconference this Thursday @ 9am PST. I am hoping to come away with the general specs for the hardware for this non-OLAP Data warehousing project.

The time frame for completion appears to be 6+ months out.

I'll keep you updated so as to elicted a well informed response from the forum.

Well folks, its now October 2004, and I still do not have specs for this Datawarehousing project. I guess the project is on hold.

If I get any additional information, I'll post it here.

Thanks again for all of your help on this subject.

Well, thought I'd bring you up to date on this eries of posts.

Finally received an answer from our channel partner on this project and supposedly all I need is a 1GB partition or so to hold the data, since OLAP is not involved here.

Since we are in the process of specifying hardware, we will end up with using a SQL 2000 database for the warehousing aspects and go from there.

Thank you everyone for your inputs to my query.

Godpseed!
