Question. In a database field what problem might occur if an inappropriate data type is chosen?

A number might be truncated on INSERT --

You might get a runtime error if you try to perform an operation on a datatype that doesn't support that operation --

There are lots and lots and lots of different types of problems that can occur from that. That's sort of the beauty of databases, too, though... Pick the right data type and you always know that whatever is in there is exactly what you said it could be -- nothing more, nothing less.
