I have used Uneraser from I had a hard drive flake out and lose the partition table and Uneraser was able to restore it. It can restore even after the drive has been reformatted.

It also has the ability to search the drive and recover files individually. The version I had though ran from a boot disk in DOS mode and for that feature could not support long filenames so the filenames would get truncated. But since I was able to recover the partition it was not a problem. I do not know if the filename support has changed in newer versions.

Check in the PC hardware - Hard drive issues forum, they can probably give you a better list of options.

It's hard to think outside the box when I'm trapped in a cubicle.

It probably depends on how it was formatted. If you do a quick format you usually are just deleting the filesystem tables, but the data is still there to be recovered. If you are doing a full format then it may overwrite or otherwise mangle the data on the disk in addition to the tables.

I have used a tool called Stellar Phoenix to recover data from dead drives. If you Google for it you will find their site. They offer a free download that only scans the disk to see if there is recoverable data. If you want to actually recover the data you will have to buy a license, but at least you can test to see if there is anything to recover for free.

Give credit to theniteowl for that one.
Glad that you were able to retrieve your data.
