I'm getting this error in my BEX log and my FULL backups are failing. Why? I read the article that Veritas has posted but it isn't very helpful. It just gives me a list of possible causes. Has anyone else had this, if so, please tell me what you did to fix the problem.

Replaced the tape drive worked for me. When you get CRC errors, check to see if it happens for the same tape every time. If it happens for every tape, then clean the tape drive 2-3 times and test. Check for soft-read, soft-write, hard-read, hard-write errors in Properties|Statistics tab of the tape drive in Devices tab in BE.

If you still believe the problem is with veritas, close Backup Exec, stop all BE services and set them to manual. Run tapeinst.exe in \Program files\veritas\be\nt to remove all veritas drivers. Then load OEM drivers or MS drivers and test with NTBackup...the native backup program in Windows. Make sure you specify a verify in NTBackup because it isn't enabled by default. If the backup fails while backing up data or during verify, then you have some good ammunition when you call the hardware manufacturer.

Good luck!

It happens to all the tapes. I'll try cleaning the drives again and again and see what happens. I appreciate your post.

This is an annoying problem that I ran into awhile back. I had to place numerous calls to Veritas' tech support because I was using brand new drives and brand new tapes. I knew it wasn't the hardware that was causing the error message.

When I called Veritas they said that the CRCs errors could also be caused by transferring the data too fast. He had me lower my SCSI transfer rate and this seemed to help quite a bit. I still get the CRC error every now and then (once every 3 months or so, but far less than before which was at least once a week). For what it's worth lowering my transfer rate didn't really slow down my backups, but results can vary I suppose.

Hope this helps.

How do I lower the transfer rate? I'm kind of new to Veritas? Thanks

jdyer,

You must called your hardware manufacture to do this... it's during POST you must turn ON and turn OFF certain features (it's in the SCSI controler BIOS basically)

I did this.....

It is hardware specific, but most vendors will say what keys you need to use to enter their configuration utility during startup. When booting up your server, look for a line duirng POST that will allow you to enter the SCSI configurations. It may be a brief display like the one you are probably used to seeing to enter the BIOS.

For example, we're using an Adaptec SCSI card and to configure it, we press CTRL-A during POST and it gets us into the SCSI Configuration Utility. From there we just lowered the transfer rates a little and re-tested. Once we found a transfer rate that worked for us we left it there.

Hope if works for you too!
