Data copy and multiple NIC's

Hi,

I have 2 NT 4.0 Servers, each have 2 NIC's, 1 connected to the LAN and the other connected to the other server via a cross over cable.

One server is the production file server, and the other is a "warm" standby server.

The idea was to use the 2nd NIC to copy data between the 2 servers without impacting LAN performance.

We have configured the standby server to copy the data from the production server using Robocopy and specifing the IP address of the 2nd NIC. What we find is packets are sent via the 2nd NIC, however the data from the production server comes in via the 1st (LAN) NIC.

Any ideas why this might be happening, and a possible resolution to get the data transfer to occur only over the 2nd NIC's ?

Thanks

It sounds like a resolving problem.

You could try putting the second NIC's onto a different subnet. So when the backup server asks for the data the request comes from your backup (cross-over cable) network and thus should be sent out the second NIC which is bound to that subnet.
New Zealand, a great place to visit.

HI.

I also agree that the second NIC should have ip in a different subnet.

You can also phisically disconnect the standby server from the main lan (NIC1) and connect it ONLY to the NIC2 of production server.

Also, take a look at the
ROUTE PRINT
command output of the production server, it might give you some hints.

Thanks for the suggestions. The second NIC's IP is in a different subnet. i.e. NIC1 = 10.x.x.x and NIC2 = 192.168.x.x

I will try the route print suggestion and see how I go.
