*.dat files with premiere?? PLEASE HELP

Does anyone know if theres a patch or something through which i can get Adobe Premiere 6.5 to allow me to add *.dat files to the bin? Or am i gonna have to actually CONVERT all the dat files i have into avi files?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated im in the middle of a project thanks

You have to convert them to avi or mpg.

hmmm.. okay thats not too good. Does anyone know of any FREEWARE software thatll convert it for me?... Ive found a lot of shareware out there but their trial period limitations make them useless (most of them will only conver maximmum the first 10 min - and ihave hours of footage)...
Anyone.. PLEASE?
