Hi. I am trying to install Norton Antivirus. The installation process goes right to the end, then i get an error message saying i do not have permission to right to the symantec regsitry key.

I have run regedit, and when i click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\symantec, i get the following error

"Cannot open Symantec: Error while opening key."

I cannot do anything with it. Delete, assign permissions etc. I just get the same error.

Soes anyone know how to fix?

Are you logging into the machine as the administrator? If not it is likely that you are a limited user who does not have access to the Registry for change/write opperations.

If you are logging in as administrator, then boot into safe mode and delete the key there. You should then be able to reinstall Norton AntiV and the Key should be recreated.

Note: If you have any other Symantech Products they may need details from this Key or Sub Keys so be prepaired to either be selective with what you delete or to re-install other symantec products.

I am logging on with my account which has administrator privilages. I have also tried this in safe mode, on the Administrator account, and exactly the same thing happens.

What's more is i have just run the recovery cd, to re-set the computer back to how it was when it left the factory. There is NO other software installed yet. This is the first thing i have tried to do. I have run the recovery cd about 3 times, but the same thing happens every time.

First of all go to and see if it helps at all, I suspect that it will not.

If It does not work then start the recovery console as per and type REG DELETE HKLM\Software\Symantec at the command prompt.

If that does not work then I would have to assume that there is a problem with the Restore Disk that you have. The system administrator should always have access to the registry, unless the users specifically set it otherwise.
