Hi -

Just built a new computer last night. All systems were go and we were in the process of installing software. I was going to transfer some accessories from my old computer to the new one via firewire. When the wire was plugged into the computer (with nothing attached to the other end), the computer went dead. There was a faint electrical smell along with it. Haven't been able to turn in back on even after thinning out the system. Any suggestions?

The firewire port is slightly bent and can accept the cable from two different directions. Not sure if it was correctly inserted or not. Would this make a difference?

Yes it would make a difference. You burned something up, now you need to find out what. Start by removing all the parts and checking for burns.
