Hi,

I'm currently investigating a cost-effective alternative backup solution, which will incorporate disk. I'd like to backup my Windows servers to disk, and to then have the data moved to tape. I'm looking to use a non-Windows NAS like the Buffalo Terastation. I can backup to the NAS fine, using NTBackup, then back the BKF file to tape (drives are in the source servers).

However I'd rather not backup the flat BKF file, as it makes restores time-consuming and resource intensive. I'd therefore like to be able to extract the data from the NAS to tape in such as way that data can be restored directly from tape.

Is there any backup software that will do this? I've been told that BackupExec will only faciliate D2D2T where the backup disk is running Windows. I therefore assume that most backup software requires a Windows NAS to faciliate the remote agent portion of the software.

Thanks

Hi

You are correct, if you are wanting to use NAS with d2d from the mainstream backup software available then the primary storage would have to be a wndows powered device instead of the usual 'cut-down' linux that you usually get.

Depending how much data you have, much better and cost effective to implement a cheap scsi attached raid array to your backup server and use some backup software to perform d2d2t.
