I just bought Neverwinter Nights Platinum DVD edition; its the whole game + 2 expansions on a DVD. I try to install the game, and sometimes the installation wizard won't even show up, or will show up, then lag when I click: "Install". Or, if I'm lucky, it'll run just fine, but then give me a "Cyclic Redundancy check" at about 28% of the way through. Sometimes that happens sooner; The whole thing is unpredictable.

Could this be because of loose wiring? Dusty DVD Drive? (I opened up the comp, pulled the "Dell-designed, easy access" drive out, but after that, I couldn't find any way of opening the drive up and blowing on it.

My DVD drive isn't giving me trouble with any other game CDs, but I've gotten "Cyclic Redundancy Check" once while tring to install a burned game (Just to TRY it, I'm not a pirate) from my CD drive.

Hola,

had a DVD drive that read all formats except Data DVD's (Magazine DVD's and Game DVD's), send it in for repair since there was still warranty on it... btw, it was a Samsung DVD Master 12E (originally made for Dell Computers)...

so if yours doesn't have warranty anymore, you might wanna take it out of the case, open it up, and use a can of compressed air to blow out dust, and a Q-Tip (careful here though) with Iso-Propanol (alcohol at 90% plus) and clean the lens...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

Most likely a bad disc, especially if it consistently stops at the same point through the installation.

I can turn it back in if I want. I'll try that, but I've also heard that a bad RAM can cause the problem, from someone who had a CRC problem. My DVD and CD drives seem to work for everything else, but my CD screwed up for the burned game CD, which worked fine on my friend's computer.

About the air can: If I take out a drive, I can't open it. (Only partially, by forcing up the bottom part)

BTW, those Air cans, can they be refilled? Or do you buy a new one each time?

I wouldn't try cleaning the lens with a q-tip if I were you as it's possible to a) knock it out of alignment b) scratch it and c) leave a bit of lint on it.

If you want to clean it just leave the drive in your machine, open the tray and give it a blast with compressed air. If there's anything more than dust inside it's probably beyond repair!

It could be a bad - or slightly bad - disc. If the air-blasting doesn't work just ask the shop to replace the disc for you. It'll be quicker than sending your drive back for repairs!

Hola,

@Nelviticus - that's why I said 'be careful though'

@EGDEric - Yes, replace DVD first before you mess with the DVD drive... You can also try to blow in from the front tray...

You have to buy new air each time. its like SpaceBalls. If you use air enough in computer blowing to expect to use another 5 or 6 cans in your lifetime and its about $10 a can you can buy an AirPro handheld battery compressor. I'm thinking about getting one of those myself for about $40. its got at about 260 PSI and runs on an 18volt battery.
