Customizing Datalibrary Alert option

Is there a way to customize Alerts option.
I have a document library list and I would like to get alerts only for a cetin type of files that are uploaded on the library. For exammple, I have documents on the library with type a, b, c and I would like to receive alerts for only type A documents.

You can probably set up a workflow using SharePoint Designer that would watch the list and send a notification email when a certain kind of document is created.
