Every few minutes the cursor stops when
entering text, as you keep typing the
pc starts bleeping as too much text has been typed.
Then it catches up with itself.

No spectacular software is being run.

What could be causing these frequent stall?

thanks for any ideas

Could be anything, but have you eliminated malware as a possibility?

Is this any text? or only when using a certain program? If so which? Does it happen if you use notepad?

As a starting point, start up task manager and on the processes tab sort into CPU usage order so that the most active process is on top. If you are doing nothing you should see the system idle process at around 99%. When you type - this should not change.

This should reveal what is eating CPU and how much.

When I was single I looked for miss right. It wasn't until after I married her I discovered her first name was always.

it's my child's pc so i've asked her
to test with notepad.

i will follow your cpu usage idea tonight
thanks.

It is probably LOADED with spyware. I have taken home PC after PC being used by a normal family, all are full of spyware, one so bad that the system would not even boot!

My favorite free anti-spyware apps are Adaware, Spybot S&D, & Spyware blaster. A-squared is the best pay-for app, but you still need to run as many as possible. Try running the first three and see what happens.

Also, it's worth replacing the keyboard to make sure it's not that. If a spare is available.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Could be Windows Indexing Service also. I've notice this was holding up the cursor a few times, and stopped when I turned off the service. I ended up turning it back on, to be able to find files quickly.

my favourite anti spyware is AVG's
not only do they offer a free one
but it actually offers an ongoing shield and
not just a mop up facility after the event.

Adaware doesn't.

I am testing the pc, so far no problems since
an anti spyware pass.
