I have a customer who wants to be able to have his computer access the phone systems paging system for an alarm. Basically when the computer goes into alarm they want it to activate the paging system and send out a tone.

They also want to be able to acknowledge this tone and shut it off using any phone in the building by dialing an extenison or some sort of code.

Anyone have any idea how this can be done and what I would need?

Your help is greatly Appreciated.

Am I to assume this cant be done?

Can anyone offer any alternative solution?

I have seen a lot of stores etc. where the same speakers and paging amp are used for alarms as well as the phone system for paging, but not controlled by the phone system. I think you would be better off with security system controlling the alarms. Someone probably makes an interface for it. You might want to do a GOOGLE for it.

I was just playing around here at the shop and this is what Ive come up with. Im wondering if I am barking up the wrong tree or maybe getting close.

I took an ATA2 and plugged my laptop into it.
From my laptop I am able to ring an extension through the modem on my laptop and the ATA2.

I'm now wondering if there is a series of digits to activate paging from this. Does the Feature button translate to a series of numbers?

If you hookup a single line phone to ATA-2 and do flash(hookswitch) 60, you are paging the phones. Flash means the same as hookswitch.

Good Luck!!

You are going to have to excuse me for being dumb, but what is hookswitch then?

Ignore that, I figured out what you mean by hookswitch.

Sorry, gapped it.

OK, so , the first part of my problem is solved. I can have my PC dial the system through my modem and play a .wav file over the paging system to act as the alarm.

Now I just have to figure out how the customer can acknowledge that alarm using another handset.
Is there a way to do a page override that would kick my computer off the paging system?

I was going to comment that I'm not sure how you would turn it off from any ext. There is a Page Timeout that you would have to adjust in System programming. Default is 45 sec. Can be adjusted up to 2700 sec. Also, if someone else is doing a page at the time that you send the alarm, your page will not start.
Guess you could write a program for the CTI to see a certain code from any set and shut it down. I think your best bet would be to use your .wav file into the music input of a paging controller like a Valcom V-2001 or some other favorite.
It's like a wiring problem. "Where there's a WALL, there's a way."
IMHO
