css menu 1

I have a menu on one of my sites in css.
It is the left side menu I am talking about and here is the problem

when you mouse over the menu the bgcolor changes but the link is only active if you touch the actul link itself. I was wondering is it possible to make the entire region active to the user doesnt have to touch the actual word...
