CSS list not appearing?

Hi,

I'm starting to use CSS for everything when designing a site. Anyhow, I'm creating my first list, when I chose my parameters and hit apply, nothing happens. I preview the page through a browser and nothing is there either. Do I have to do something other than that? I decided to enable the "unordered list" button in the properties panel, thinking that might acticate it. It places a bullet but over-rides my CSS setting. Any suggestions?
