Hi,

We are due an upgrade on our CS1000 next week this will include CC6 and Call Pilot (yes still using meridian mail).

Currently we have about 30 i2004's that our on our LAN along with the voice media card.

We have been told that we need to create a Tlan to keep the voice traffic seperated from network traffic.

This means we will need to create a Vlan on our switches to accomodate.

My question is are there any guides/recommendations for setting this up. Also if we set the phones to use a Vlan ID can the PC's that are connected to them still route to our LAN ?

Thanks

The converging data networks with VOIP guide is a good place to start. It's doc number NN43001-260.

If the phone tags the voice packets to the voice VLAN, then yes, the PCs connected to the port in the phone can still pass their packets to the data VLAN, assuming you tag voice packets with the voice VLAN number, and the PC port is set to untag all. The data switches need to be configured appropriately for this to happen.

You don't NEED to separate your voice traffic with a VLAN. It certainly is a best practice, but if the network is properly configured with DiffServ QoS capable devices, there is no REQUIREMENT to separate into VLANs.

Depending on the size of the deployment and (more importantly) the skill of the IT department, it might be easier to NOT create the VLANs if you can enable solid QoS.

My $.02
