I will be upgrading from Crystal 8.5 to Crystal XI in the very near future. One of my primary reasons for upgrading is the ability to schedule reports to run overnight and be delivered via email or printed or whatever.

At first I thought I needed to purchase Crystal Reports XI Server Edition to have the ability to schedule reports in Enterprise Manager.

I only need to have 1 employee use Crystal (the schedules will deliver all the reports to intended recipients). Someone told me that if I only have 1 Crystal user, I don't need Server Edition, and that Crystal XI Professional Edition would have the components necessary to schedule reports. Can anyone verify that this is correct?

Not having to purchase server edition will save me at least $7000.

Better yet purchase Ido's product Visual CUT for $400. In terms of scheduling crystal reports, there is nothing the Crystal Server can do that Visual CUT cannot do.

Visual CUT is actually less than $400 but, if you don't need the extra functionality, why not try the free Crystal Report Server that comes with Crystal XI Professional?

Please let us know how you like it.

Ido -

I'm going to purchase the CRXI Dev Edition (was going to anyway) and I'll setup the 5 complimentary named user edition of server and let you know how it works.

I see that your VisualCUT program has a "burst" feature which appears to split up a report based on groupings. Any idea of Server does this? This is a feature I have long desired but have never figured out for myself or found a solution developed by someone else.

With VisualCUT can you setup a report to split by groups and then email each "split" to a specific recipient on a schedule?

Thanks.

I don't believe Crystal Reports Server provides bursting functionality.

Yes, using Visual CUT you can schedule a report to split by groups and then email each "split" to a specific recipient. You just need a database field or a formula that returns the email address for each group.

Cheers,
- Ido
