Need to schedule an object to SMTP as the destination but would like to use Exchange distribution groups from the public folders rathere than specific emal addresses. Is an exchange add on required

Check with your Exchange Admin, I believe that those groups have an email address, much as the Folders in Exchange (another popular way to distribute reports, email them to the folders and the users can just grab them anytime, and you don't need numerous emails).
