Hi folks

Just bought a 1gb cruzer mini to transfer stuff from an old win98 computer to our new xp system. I downloaded the driver from sandisk's website, which said it was for win98 SE... I'm not sure if I have that but I assume I don't because now whenever I plug in the jumpdrive a dialog pops up and the computer crashes. The win98 version I'm running is 4.10.1998 if that helps you tell whether I'm using SE or not. (I must sound really naive but basically this is a computer I handed down to my parents about 7 years ago and my xmas gift to them was a new system and everything transferred to it so I haven't seen win98 in a LONG time)

So I've done some searching and came across a couple other drivers I'd like to try, but the only problem is I can't uninstall the driver I'm using now! And that's where I need help:
Whenever I plug in the jumpdrive the computer crashes (blue screen), but in order to reinstall the driver I have to right click the device in device manager, which won't show the jumpdrive unless its plugged in, but the second I do that it crashes before I can disable it ... and its a vicious cycle.

Any suggestions?

Basically I just need to either uninstall or reinstall the driver. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you plug it in and then boot the PC? You could also try Safe Mode and see if it's registering any conflicts...

Another way - get a cross over cable.

On Win 98 set as host. Can't quite remember where but it is somewhere in Accessories/Communications. It is the PC to PC transfer program.

On Win XP set as client in "Accessories/Communications/Network and Dialup connections"

You can then navigate to the relevant directories and pull the files across.

@G0AOZ:

If I reboot, win98 crashes upon startup again. I cancel the log in screen as always and then the same dialog pops up trying to recognize the hardware ... just like when I first plug jump drive in, it's this dialog that crashes to the blue screen.

Yes it wouldn't be hard to make a cross over cable I suppose, but now I've created this situation where any time a jumpdrive is plugged into the computer it crashes, a situation I'd like to remedy. I can transfer files via other means well enough (if nothing else I'll just move the hard drive), but I'd still like to figure out how to disable a driver for a device that isn't plugged in.

Any ideas?

Having another problem - trying to update win98 through windows update ... for some reason I can't load activex controls on the page, even though my security settings clearly allow all activex controls. Windows update interprets this as a non-admin log in, but the fact is I have no logins on this computer.

Any ideas on how to allow activex controls other than through the internet explorer security options?

Which explorer do you have?

Alternatively, download firefox and get the win98 updates through from firefox. It is fast, compatible and it works.
