I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 920 CRT monitor that is just under 4 years old. Just recently I have noticed flakes of the screen coating are coming off leaving lighter areas on the screen. As this continues it is becoming more noticable/annoying. Is there anything that can be done to repair or replace the coating ?

Sounds like the tube's phosphor coating is coming off.
If so, then suggest buying a new monitor, because even though it's possible to replace the tube it's not worth the expense on a 4 year old unit. And CRT monitor prices have decreased dramatically over the past year due to the popularity of LCD monitors.

Thanks ski.

Disappointing, but I take your point.

You're welcome, and good luck with it.

Is this possibly a plastic coating on the exterior of the tube that was put on as a glare or reflection reduction process?

If so, you possibly could speed it up till it is all gone by cleaning the screen with a damp cloth every couple of days.

Thanks Ed,

I don't know if it is plastic, it is a very thin coating. It is on the exterior of the screen - I guess it is an anti-glare measure. I did consider trying to remove it, but imagine that it wont be very easy and it will get a lot worse before it gets better (or even bearable).

Thanks for your suggestion, but I think I might as well look for something new.

You might want to send an e-mail to their service department or call them. While it is probably not under warranty, they may want to know about it so they can possibly use a better coating or something like that. There may be some kind of solvent that could take that off, but I doubt it. It is probably baked on or something like that. Still there may be some kind of a solvent or chemical cleaner that can take that off without destroying the plastic case that holds it together.

Thanks ceh4702,

I have tried e-mailing Mitsubishi about it without any response - although I wouldn't be surprised if I'd sent it to the wrong department as their web presence can only be described as sprawling !

Well if you really want to get their attention, you could find out who is in changer of their US operations and write him a letter. My wife would probably write or call the office of the CEO. She tried that with Ford once.

So is this a glass or a plastic. Sounds like the tube is glass. There is probably a polishing compound that can take it down to the bare glass. Watch jewleres sometimes clean watch bezels with a polishing compound. You might ask a person that works with Eye Glasses. They may know how to get it off.

Thanks ceh4702,

That's a good idea, I'll ask at my opticians - maybe I could still save my CRT!
