I usually spend all of my Tek-Tips time in the Programmer's forum, so please bear with me.

I needed to establish a crossover connection from my Win98 box to my XP box, and successfully did so by reviewing pervious posts in this forum from other users. But I do have a few questions about the configuration:

1. The IP on both machines are the same. I got the IP info from the "Zones" tab on Zone Alarm. Is this cool? I thought that the IP had to be different and unique.

2. I shared out both of my hard drives on the Win98 box so that I could copy 11GB of data to the XP box. I saw the Win98 machine on the network, but couldn't navigate to the root directories of the drives. I tried mapping a network connection, but to no avail. In the end, I had to create a shortcut to both C: and D: and place them in the Win98 Shared folder so that I could access them from my XP machine. It worked good enough - I got the files transferred, but it seems that since I have full admin/wgm rights on both machines, I should be able to do what I wanted from one to the other.

3. Since I still use the Win98 machine in addition to the XP machine, I would like to keep my crossover connection for future networking. After my file transfer, I have UNshared all of my drives and folders. Anything else I need to do to ensure that I am not inadvertently sharing to the world when I am on the internet?

Thanks!

Yes, if you were using TCP/IP for Windows file sharing, the IP numbers would need to be unique. Windows file sharing CAN be hosted over IP, but it was designed using SMB over NetBIOS/NetBUEI, and I suspect that is how you are using it.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
