Crontab -e Errors out could not exec the editor

Using SCO 5.0.2. Can not edit the cronfile with crontab.
Error Crontab: could not exec the editor

The editor is vi

What am I missing?
Thanks for any help!

What does echo $EDITOR display?

Does just typing $EDITOR at the prompt load vi properly? Annihilannic.

It was set to vi.
I changed it to /usr/bin/vi and it now works.
