I have a user who is using a client based rule - so if he turns his computer off, or exits outlook for that matter, the rule will no longer run. Is there a way to implement the rule on the server so that it executes on the server instead of the local client?

It depends on the rule, some will only work as Client Only.

If you want, post a description of the rule you are trying and I'll set up a similar one to see if I can get it server based.

The rule would need to forward an email from a specific person to another specific person. It would also need to move the email to another folder.

OK, I see the issue already.

If you specify to forward to server based folder (one that shows up in the persons mailbox) that will be a server based rule and will run whenever.

If you specify a folder in a .pst file on the persons hard drive it can only be client based and will only run when outlook is running on that machine.

I have no problem moving the email to another folder on the server (within the users mailbox on the server). I just don't see any way to create a server side rule. I'm not very bright as far as exchange 5.5 goes and therefore I'm kind of ignorant on this subject. I've looked through books and it mentions about server rules but it never says anything on how to go about setting them up.

You just create it in Outlook, as long as it is possible to make it a server side rule it will.

If you want to see how that works just play around with your Outlook. Add a personal folder (Tools/Services Add then personal folder). Then create a rule that moves some messages to it. You will get a warning message that it is Client Only. Create another that moves it to a folder you created within your mailbox, no warning so server side.
