Creating a chat room with VB.Net

Hi,
Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to best create chat rooms using VB.Net? At any given time, we might have 5,000 online users chatting with each other. We would like to provide both functionalities:
1) Ability to chat one-on-one.
2) Ability to chat in a group setting, like AOL chat rooms where a user can create their own chat room, or we can set up some pre-determined rooms.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions, book recommendations?
