creating a BACK button 1

A friend of mines was telling me.. that there was a way to create a button or link for the user to click back.. and it would go to the previous page without loosing history of the forward.

what i mean is.. i want to create a button like the one you see in your tookbar the "back" button .. when you clikc back theres an option to click forward.. but if you make a link.. which most likely you link it to the previous page .. which clears history of the forward button.

he was telling me something about.. history -1
I searched google and can not find it... is there anyone out there who knows what im talkin about ??
