createTextNode() in a <TD>

Hi all

I want to use createTextNode method on the text inside a cell(td) and this cell has plain text in it so that i can use select() method on this range created. However createTextNode can be used only on textarea,button,input and body objects. If anyone can tel me the workaround for this then it would be very much helpful.
