We are successfully using active directory. This is a mixed mode environment with one W2K3 server (AD) and the rest are NT 4.0 servers. One of our NT 4.0 servers is our Backup Domain Controller (BDC). We have a new W2K3 server that I'd like to make our BDC. I'm assuming the first step is to run DCPROMO on the new server. One of the questions it asks me is this.

--Do you want this server to become a domain controller for a new domain or an additional domain controller for an existing domain.

How do I answer this? We are a small network all on the same subnet.

Thanks for any help.

You want to make it an additional domain controller for an existing domain.

With Windows 2003 DCs you don't have a PDC and BDCs. (The only BDCs you can have on the domain are NT 4 BDCs). Just run through the wizard and that will setup a new DC for you.

Thanks for the feedback.

One of the warning messages if I choose this option is:

---Proceeding with this option will delete all local accounts on this server.

What exactly are they referring to? Will it delete all our users profiles currently on the server?

Any domain profiles will remain. It's referring to local accounts on the machine. Windows 2000/2003 domain controllers can not have local users. Those are what will be deleted.
