Hi

I have a complete backup of a database, can I create a new instance of a database from this backup? How do I go about this?

thanks, thats looks roughly right although I dont want to copy a "live" database as such I want to create a database from a backup.

A similar process - you'll not need the control files as they're created by your new clone script.

Ive got the sql script ready to go but I cant connect to an idle instance. Ive added a net service and listener entry but get the following:

sql> connect '/ as sysdba' @newinstancename
Enter password:
ERROR:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
sql>

I have the database back to mount now, just get the errors
ora-01194 and ora-01110
