Can anyone here point me in the right direction with "how to's" or links that would give me direction to take in order to create a similar product like my.netscape.net or my.yahoo.com.

I plan on using LAMP.

There are programs that let you add content such as these to your websites. They let you create or use "blocks" that you can use for weather, news, stock reports, polls or advertising and just about anything else you can think of. They go by many different names. Web Portal, News Retrieval or News Posting System or Content Management System. If you own lugot.org then you may already know what I'm talking about. I like phpnuke but you can find many more to choose from here:
