Crazy "-" Character Behavior in Word 2000

Almost everytime time I use a dash (-) Word 2000 translates it into a funcky dash image slightly larger than the standard ASCII "-" character.

I need to disable the "feature" as it is effecting documentation when I export, copy & paste etc.

How can I turn this off?

if u go to tools, options, autocorrect, then under autocorrect tab u will likely find - to be replaced by funky -. highlight and delete
