Crawling HTTPS web sites with Sharepoint 1

I am trying to index an HTTPS web site on the Internet. I have added a content source and entered the starting page of the web site into the URL field. When Sharepoint tries to crawl the site, the following message is displayed in the log:

"URL is excluded because the URL protocol is not recognized or restricted"

I can guess that this is happening because Sharepoint does not have a configured document handler to process HTTPS-based web sites.

What can be done to enable this functionality?

P.S. I have already read the document located at

but it still does not provide any solution to enabling crawling of HTTP web sites
