I am using a Machine with a PII 350 processor and 128Mb of RAM. I am attemping to install windows 98 (first edition). The hard drive has been formatted in FAT32. When I attempt to install wiindows by booting from the CDROM, windows setup begins, the files needed for the setup wizard load and then the machine freezes. Has anyone got any ideas?

There are many things that can cause a machine to freeze. I would suggest that you check all cable connections and the remove and replace your video card and Ram.You might try loading the cab files for windows to your hard drive and the setting up from there. Use your boot disk when starting, Change to C: drive and open new Directories Windows/Options/Cabs and copy the files from the CD to these directories. when this is completed, type Setup and away you go........Good Luck...........Dave

I've tried what you suggested Dave, but I'm still having problems. I've tried using another CD drive but it still crashes at the same point. Windows 98 SE installed fine when I used the PC a while ago.
Thanks for your help
James

I've also tried changing the RAM and the video card. I also tired taking out the NIC. I've even swapped over the CPU.
None of these measures have worked. I recently had windows XP installed and there were no problems.
I'm using a windows 98SE starup disc, could that be causing the problem?

Howdy:

Have you tried disabling the on-board anti-virus program??

Do that.. reformat once more and then install using the startup floppy and with cd-rom support.. changing to the cd-rom drive and running setup from there through DOS..

To my knowledge, Win98 is NOT self-booting !!

That seems to have worked. Thank you Murray, that was incredible.
That's saved me a lot of heartache.
Thanks to everyone who responded
