Howdy. I'm running XP Pro on a p4 1.6A on an abit TH7-II mobo. According to Task Manager, my CPU is constantly at a minimum of 14% usage. No matter what I unload, I stay at that 14% usage. I have no processes using up 14%--the only one running is SVChost.exe which between 1% and 2%. No other users are logged into the box. Any ideas?

Thanks

Try getting of QSLICE (probably in older reskits), that might give a different view.. (although it shouldn't matter)

I assume that you have the "Show processes from all users" checked? and that you have local admin privs?

Also - the only one process running is svchost? Could be, but that would not be a rather typical setup... (come to think of it - that would be quite hard te accomplish.. some processes don't like to be killed... - you could kill them, but the system BSODs right away after that.. (some subsystems like csrss, lsass and/or smss spring to mind..); also the system would be rather crippled in the long run without an idle task running for background cleaning up)

(ok - this is from my head, but you get the general idea, I guess...)

Also - do you have 16bit tasks visible? Although if you don't, the CPU usage would probably contributed to the relevant NTVDM...

oh well - do you have some more details?

Are you running McAfee?
I get the same problem and runs at 14%
Also I have the continuing problem with page file increasing to 2Gb - it only occurs when NIS is installed and when an internet connection is made.
Thereafter the processes 'SVCHOST.EXE' continue to grow in size until they reach the "Gb limit.
The only way I can stop this is after logging off internet is to go to task manager and Processes and then close down SVCHOST - local service.

The CPU useage then goes back to zero!!

Anyone know of a fix?

Have a look here and see if it helps with Shutdown (or similar) and Norton Internet Security.
The following is part of what is there.

"If you are running Windows XP and want Norton Internet Security 2002
here is a fix I discovered while I was on hold with Symantec, by the
way they have no fix for this yet so if you call Symantec they will
probably tell you to do this, they were happy to here from someone who
figured it out, I suppose it saved them some R&D time.

Windows XP & Norton Internet Security 2002 Fix

When doing a shutdown with Windows Xp and NIS 2002 you will get a
error about low system memory.

To correct this go to Start - Search - Files or Folders
All Files and Folders
Type in Iamapp.exe
Right click on the file and go to properties
Click on the Compatibility Tab
Click th box to run in compatibility mode
Scroll to Windows 2000 and click ok
Restart computer, you will probably get error on this reboot and then
it should be gone.

Have a go with TASK INFO 2002.
It shows you exactly whats running.
I have that activating XP by Go to Start->Run and enter the following
oobe/msoobe /a
Also eats CPU. Must be the security thing/
