My PC freezes after being on for a few hours, when I'm on the internet or something. Usually freezes after 30mins playing a game.

This used to happen like once every 3 months....since I upgraded my CPU it happens all the time.

So...I was thinking of buying this cooler - cheap, quiet, but good (and can also be used when I build a new PC in mid-2004).

Do you guys think this'll do the trick??

P.S. - It's an AMD Athlon 1.2GHz (200MHz FSB)

Just remember that the cpu can not get cooler than
the air temp inside the case .
Make sure that a fan is down in the front sucking cool air in the cabinet , and upper in the back a fan that blows the hotter air out . ( try not to get hot air built up inside)

I don't have a ny case fans - my PC never came with them, and I never had many problems until this new CPU (even when the Graphics Card, HDD, and RAM were all upgraded).

After the last freeze, my BIOS said my CPU Temp. was 59oC, and my System Temp. was 49oC. Is this normal feezing temp.?

Would it help if I used it with the case off?

You should install some case fans atleast one in the back .
They don't cost much .
Blowing hot air on the cpu won't make it cooler , or if the air is sucked trough the heatsink(normal case) .
Also your video card can get hot , in a tower the GPU is pointing down and hot air get trapped under the vid.card.
And without air circulation in the case that hot air is just building up under there.
With intake/exhaust fans there is rotation of air in the cabinet .

So you suggest buying case fans rather than a better CPU fan?

I've never installed a case fan before....how do you install one? There deosn't appear to be anywhere on the case where one can be attatched....

There are no "holes" on my PC Case (except the tiny ones on the side) - so how would a fan be installed??

That my friend is up to you to find out .
Search google for the word "case mods" and im sure you get a lot of inputs . I don't know what your case looks like .And another thing , small cases are the worst to get cool .
What do you have:
desktop , mini tower ,midi tower ..

I have a mini-tower (prob. about 35 high x 20 across x50cm Deep). The motherboard is a Micro-ATX Factor.

I'm really unsure about this....if i take pics of my case with my digital camera, could I have your e-mail to send them to you - you might be able to help...??

Doesn't it have a name / brand . I'm sure i could find it on the net .

My PC was bought from a magazine...

The case just has the logo of "Blue-Ridge Computers" on the front.

GoatyGoat,
Didn't we have this exact same thread with you several weeks ago?
Then you recieved the exact same advice
I remember you were using your original small heatsink/fan that you had been running on your old Duron 750?
This forum is intended for the use of computer professionals, A number of this forums top experts have given you good advice on this subject previously but you seem to have ignored it.
Can I ask you, are you a computer professional? I understand you are 15years old.

paparazi don't be so hard , i'll help out a little bit more .
Just to get goatyguy in the right direction .

I did not ask the same question....I am wondering about a specific fan and case fans.

Also, your meemory isn't as good as you think....it was an Athlon 700. :)

The placement of the case is also important. If it is enclosed behind a desk or the rear is too close to a wall, then air will not circulate properly.
It seems obvious that your issue is due to the upgrade. Before, you had a CPU that was less hot, so whatever air cooling you had was effective. This is no longer the case, so you must find ways of improving airflow.
Try taking the sides off of your case and see how long you can work with the PC. If you still have trouble, try changing the place where the case is.

About case fans, if the case does not have any holes for it, given its size there is not much you will be able to do aside from change to a bigger one.

Pascal.

I was gonna buy a new case for the new PC i'm building next year...I could buy it now (£25) and shove my old components in it for now....It's got a side window with a fan and looks bigger than the one I already have....

Look any good?

Also, I've opened the case and am using my desk fan to blow across the case....I'll see if it still freezes, and if so, after how long. My idle temp is now 33oC (used to be 38oC).

Well my temp didnt go above 57oC with my fan on and the case open....so I guess I need a case fan or two - and if that doesnt work, a better CPU fan too.

After opening the case I see there is a holder for a 80mm fan at the front near the base. Also there are some holes at the back...maybe they can be used aswell if I buy a bracket for a fan.

I will first buy a case fan and new CPU fan (approx. £10) then if that doesnt solve it, I'll buy the new case.

Thanks everyone
