I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop (with a CD burner/DVD player), running WinXP Pro, with a 2.4 ghz Celeron processor w/512mb ram. T
he problem we're having is when you insert a disc, the cpu will then freeze about 5 seconds later (it seems as if as soon as the cpu 'recognizes' the disc it'll lock up). It doesn't matter if it's a blank cd or if it contains data/music(or even a DVD), it'll STILL freeze the cpu...then I have to hold the power button down, etc. to reboot. After re-booting, I am able to access the disc, burn CDs, etc.
I don't know what could be causing this...any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
~gg

kayaboy,

I would venture to say that it is the XP OS system that is locking up or an application called upon disc insertion.

Look for the program association when you load a CD/DVD these are/might be different try setting to none for CD, DVD and Blank.

Start clean, no associations, and you should not lock up.

Add associations one at a time a check. etc etc....

You might find the offending application.

Thanks RVNGUY for your quick response...I've checked all that you've noted, and cpu still freezes! Also, when I insert a disc there is NO screen that'll pop up and ask "what would you like to do", etc. (although this screen used to pop up!).
So, I'm not quite sure what to do next. I've run Ad-Aware, Spybot, Norton Anti-Virus--all to no avail.
What else do you think it could be? anyone?
Thanks!!!!

kayaboy,

What I meant was for you to set all associations to "none" before placing a cd in the drive.

Go to explare > tools > folder options > select file types tab and look for the file types linked to cd file types highlight and click advanced and select remove do this for each file type that might be on the cd. Also if using XP; in control panel there is a setting for 'autorun', disable this.

Then reboot and try to insert,

if noy joy:

and if you can remove the drive caddy if it has one for the cd/dvd, remove it. In CP > system > device manager > find the drive and remove it. reboot and insure that there is no drive in cp. shut down install drive and reboot, XP should find new hardware and install it. This might correct the problem if the install got corrupted somehow. Post back if there is still no joy.

Another thing, insert your disc , close any window it opens. Now open command prompt and type sfc/scannow and let it scan. When it finishes restart the computer. Give that a try.

Have you tried a different CD/DVD drive?
you might have a hardware failure on the existing drive.

good luck

Check in the Event Viewer. It's in Admin Tools in the Control Panel. It should point to problems that occur.
