CPU domination by apps 3

Hi all,

I have a 700mhz celeron/ winXP, and some programs keep dominating the processing time. mostly, it is

msmsgs.exe
rundll32.exe (and im pretty sure its nvidia's nview panel thing, but i'd like to keep using it)

what can i do about it? its very annoying and the only way to stop it is to end process from task manager. So if some program just decides to gobble up all cpu power, i can't do anything unless I 'end task'. is there a way to just limit the max amount of cpu time available to certain apps automatically, other then manually changing priority? thank you.

MSMSGS.EXE could be either Windows Messenger or a Worm see

You should follow the instructions in

to make sure you are free of malware.

rundll32.exe is a utility that allows dll files to be used as an application. You may find this several times in your process list.

What sort of percentage are each of the processes using?

when either one starts they use 85-90% - which is pretty much everything. Im pretty sure my system is clean because i got norton AV 2k3 and ad-aware se installed.

yeah and i disalbed msn messanger from starting up, and the process msmsgs still starts. in fact when i end the process it restarts after some time. how do i know whether its spyware or a worm?

Minimum Xp SP2 Filewall active.

Norton, or any other single scanner, is simply not enough any more. Even the most experienced users on this forum get infected from time to time and they are using multipul scanners.

If after doing that you are still experiencing problems try downloading the latest version of MSN Messenger to make sure it is installed properly, or if you don't want it uninstall it totally.

thx guys, that seems to solve the problem, i'll just uninstall msmsgs and that should do it.

however, can i have programs with focus get high priority for cpu activity? because that would pretty much solve the problem once and for all. i dont even mind these programs getting idle cpu cycles untill i get the opportunity to shut them off, but when it starts in the middle of a game or somesuch - that's pretty annoying. so if any of you would know how to do that, sure thx a lot.

basically, its "allow background programs to use only idle cpu cycles.
