Are cpu's that are 'ecc' class types only operational with 'ecc' class type memory rams? I assume that is the case since I have a cpu class ecc and is not posting/booting with non ecc memories. Does the MB care if the cpu is ecc or not?

Typically ecc memory is turned on/off in the BIOS. I've never seen a cpu that cared about what type of memory was installed. It is usually in used in server mobo's but I have seen desktop boards with the ecc option.

The motherboard may care but the CPU rarely does.

I know that the old socket 940 Opterons required ECC memory, and since the memory controller is on the CPU and not the mainboard then that would be considered a requirement of the CPU. But that is the only case that I can think of where a CPU would actually require ECC memory rather than the mainboard requiring it.
