Well, I have been over this a number of times and can not find a solution. I have no indication of why but the CPU is at 100%. I have to reboot to stop it and when I stare and compare I see no difference in what is running or services that are enabled and running. It does not happen all the time, only oncve in a while and a reboot fixes it.

Does it occur shortly after you boot the machine, perhaps while it is searching for, or installing updates (Svchost), running Search, or Indexing, or the Trusted Installer processes?

Looking at running process in the Task Manager (as an Administrator to show all), is the first thing to do.

Malware and viruses can cause this too.

thats just it, there is no service I can see that is using the cpu. it just pegs out at 100 unless i reboot.

a question: Have you run a mem test?

as it could be a bad RAM bit that is causing the problem...

also underpowered RAM, up the RAM voltage a notch or two in the BIOS, while you are there check the timings on the RAM aswell and adjust accordingly (sometimes RAM gets timed wrong and causes little quirks like what you are experiencing)...

Does the "Resource Monitor" accessible via the Performance Tab in Task Manager offer any further diagnostic help?

Well, I cleared out my prefetch and also turned it off. I have not had that problem since i did it and I see no difference in speed. The prefetch didn't seem to make a difference anyway. I'll run it this way for a little while and see if it does the trick.

I have had a few apps with bad memory management do tht to me - particularly the NetHelpDesk software that we are soon dumping. It didn't work much better in XP but really fouls up the system in Vista.

But that's kinda weird that the process monitor shows you nothing holding CPU. I can always see it when I check the processes tab in Task Manager. End that process and CPU goes right back down to nothing.
